<dc:description>In 1902 Bishop Fenton invited the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth to Enfield to assist Fr O’Gorman, Parish Priest of St George’s in Enfield, with work in Ponders End. Because they could not rent a home in Enfield, they travelled daily from Bow Common to Ponders End. As there was no transport between Enfield Town and Ponders End, the Sisters assigned to the school in Ponders End walked to and from Alma Road School where the Catholic children were accommodated.

In 1904 Redemptorist Fathers from London took charge of Ponders End and Edmonton, and Enfield became a separate parish. Two years later, Ponders End separated from Edmonton and the building of a new church was begun, only to be halted by lack of funds. It was finally completed in 1924, and the Parish Priest then set about building a school in what is now Durants Road. The Sisters transferred, with together with their pupils, from Alma Road to the new school in 1928. They then purchased land behind the church in Ponders End, and plans for a Convent were drawn up. This Convent, under the patronage of Our Lady of Loreto, was completed in February 1929. In 1940, the Convent burned down when it was hit by a landmine, which also destroyed the Church of St Mary's. It was replaced by the exisitng Convent in London Road, Enfield, which was built in 1955. It remained one of the Congregation's houses until 1976, when it was sold to the Catholic Italian Mission. By that time, all the Sisters who had taught in St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Ponders End, had either retired of transferred elsewhere.

The Sisters are still present in their Convent in Enfield Town and in 1995 they celebrated 100 years of their Congregation’s work in England.</dc:description>
