Description | Black and white Photograph of potrate of Sir John Sinclair, 1st Bart of Ulbster (1754 - 1835); Sir John Sinclair was the editor of The Statistical Account of Scotland, a detailed account of the geography, history, economy, and society of every parish in Scotland based upon questionnaires sent out in 1790 and 1791. It is claimed that the modern use of the word statistics derives from Sinclairs use of it for his account. He also raised a regiment, the Rothesay and Caithness fencibles in 1794, whose uniform he designed and is wearing in this full length portrait. |
