Cardinal Beaton was born circa 1494 and was Archbishop of St Andrews and the last Scottish Cardinal prior to the Reformation; he was murdered in his own Castle of St Andrews on 29th May 1546 and was succeeded as Archbishop of St Andrews by John Hamilton
