DescriptionThis photograph, numbered 4836 on the back, shows a painting of Bishop James Gillis; the painting shows a young Bishop Gillis in a cloistered setting; the photograph is accompanied by a postcard typed by Peter F Anson of Montrose which gives his reaction to the portrait, which was that it depicts Bishop Gillis as a young man and the sleeveless rochet is just the sort of French garment he would have worn; Bishop Gillis was born in Montreal, Canada on 7th April 1802 and ordained on 9th June 1827; he was nominated titular bishop of Limyra and coadjutor vicar apostolic on 28th July 1837 and consecrated at Edinburgh on 22nd July 1838; he was succeeded on on 24th May 1852 and died in Edinburgh on 24th February 1864.
