Description | This faded photograph shows an unsmiling Mgr James Clapperton in a formal studio portrait, seated in a chair and with his left arm leaning on a vase of flowers; Mgr Clapperton was born at Fochabers in 1813; on his ordination, he was appointed one of the professors in Blairs College; a short time afterwards, he was sent to the Scots College in Valladolid as professor, where he remained for five years; on his return to Scotland, he was placed in Portobello; from Portobello he was removed to Peebles, where he laboured for forty years; his hearing having failed him, he was compelled to retire from active mission life and returned to the north, to Aberlour and latterly in his native town of Fochabers; he died at Fochabers on 19th July 1901, aged 87. |
