Description	This photograph is taken inside a church and shows a group of clergy and altar boys on the altar, with 3 more senior clergy seated on the left of the altar, one of whom appears to be Cardinal Gray, his right arm raised as he gives a blessing; the first few rows of the congregation can also be seen, dressed in 1950-style clothing; Cardinal Gray was born in Leith, Edinburgh in 1910 and was ordained to the priesthood on 15th June 1935; he was appointed as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 1951, a position which he held until his retirement in 1985, a period of 34 years; in 1969, he became the first resident Scottish Cardinal in Scotland since the Reformation; he died in Edinburgh on 19th July 1993, aged 82; full details of Cardinal Gray's life can be found on pp 430 to 436 of The Catholic Directory for Scotland for 1994.
