Description | This photograph shows Mgr Claeys seated in formal pose, dressed in his Army uniform during the First World War, his hat tucked into his left arm (a note on the front of the photograph gives the date as 1917); Mgr Claeys was born in Belgium on 29th August 1875; he entered St Peter's College, Bearsden in 1893 and was ordained priest on 19th March 1899; during the First World War period, he served with the 33rd Division of Artillery of the British Army and saw service in France and Flanders; as a result of his war experience, his health suffered but he was able to resume work in the Archdiocese of Glasgow; he died in Wemyss Bay on 17th November 1928, aged 53. |
