Description | This photograph shows Cardinal Francesco Marchetti-Selvaggiani seated in formal pose, wearing his robes of office and pectoral crucifix; he appears to be in middle age; Cardinal Marchetti-Selvaggiani was born on 1st October 1871 and ordained priest in 1896; he was appointed Titular Bishop of Seleucia Di Isauria in 1918 and elevated to Cardinal by Pope Pius XI in 1930, receiving the title of S. Maria Nuova; he was advanced to Cardinal-Bishop of Frascati in 1936; he was appointed Secretary of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office in 1939; he was then appointed Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals and Bishop of Ostia in 1948; he died on 13th January 1951, aged 79. |
