DescriptionThis photograph shows a smiling Bishop McGill in a head and shoulders portrait; Bishop McGill is wearing his Bishop's robes and pectoral crucifix; Bishop McGill was born in Glasgow on 14th January 1912; he was ordained priest in Glasgow on 29th June 1936; he was consecrated Bishop of Argyll and the Isles in Oban on 22nd June 1960 and spent the following 8 years as Bishop in that diocese; he was translated to the vacant see of Paisley and was installed as Bishop on 27th September 1968; on reaching the age of 75, Bishop McGill submitted his resignation to the Holy Father and this was accepted in April 1987 when he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese until the appointment of his successor, Bishop John Mone, on 8th March 1988; Bishop McGill died in Cardonald on 9th November 2005, aged 93; full details of Bishop McGill's life can be found on pp 494 to 500 of The Catholic Directory for Scotland 2007.
