DescriptionThis formal head and shoulders photograph shows a smiling Bishop Monaghan, wearing large spectacles and his pectoral crucifix, with a striped curtain in the background; Bishop Monaghan was born in Bathgate, West Lothian, on 11th July 1914 and ordained a priest in Edinburgh on 11th June 1940; he was nominated titular bishop of Cell Ausaille (and auxiliary bishop), 24th April 1970, and ordained in Edinburgh on 23rd May 1970; he retired as auxiliary bishop on 13th July 1989 and died in Nazareth House, Lasswade on 3rd June 1994 aged 79; further details of Bishop Monaghan's life can be found in his obituary on pp 441 to 445 of the 1995 edition of The Catholic Directory for Scotland.
