Description | This publishing proof shows Archbishop James Scanlan seated in formal pose in an outdoor setting, wearing his Archbishop's robes and pectoral crucifix. The cutting is headed "Ad Multos Annos!" and is entitled "Right Rev James Donald Scanlan, DCL, BL, Bishop of Motherwell. Archbishop Scanlan was born in Glasgow on 24th January 1899 and was ordained in Westminster on 29th June 1929; he was consecrated by Archbishop Godfrey on 20th June 1946 and translated to Motherwell in 1955. Archbishop Scanlan retired on 23rd April 1974 and died in London on 25th March 1976. Full details of Archbishop Scanlan's life can be found on pp 370 to 377 in the Catholic Directory for 1977. |
