Description | This photograph shows a partially built church situated on a building site, with what appears to be partially built houses in the background; there is no indication of the name of the church or the location, but the photograph was taken by an Edinburgh photographer [and presumably has some connection to Cardinal Gray]; Cardinal Gray was born in Leith, Edinburgh in 1910 and was ordained to the priesthood on 15th June 1935; he was appointed as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 1951, a position which he held until his retirement in 1985, a period of 34 years; in 1969, he became the first resident Scottish Cardinal in Scotland since the Reformation; he died in Edinburgh on 19th July 1993, aged 82; full details of Cardinal Gray's life can be found on pp 430 to 436 of The Catholic Directory for Scotland for 1994. |
