Date[19th/20th cent]
LevelItem
DescriptionThis pull-out from a publishing proof, which is unnamed, shows [what appears to be a new church, with another church just visible to its left, which is possibly the church photographed in PG/763, PG/764 and PG/765 as both churches are in the same setting with low stone wall and stone arched front gate; according to The Catholic Directory for Scotland for 2009, the current church at Fetternear is Our Lady of the Garioch and St John the Evangelist, built in 1859 but only open to the public from 1869; prior to 1859, according to page 110 of The Catholic Directory for 1859, the small body of Catholics used the Domestic Chapel of Fetternear House, the proprietor of which was Colonel Leslie of Balquhain, the proprietor; in The Catholic Directory for 1871, on page 113, there is reference under Fetternear to St Ninian's, or "the old Chapel" so it is possible that St Ninian's was the name given to the Domestic Chapel; this photograph possibly shows both St Ninian's Church and Our Lady of the Garioch and St John the Evangelist Church side by side]
