Description | This photograph, annoted on the back simply as 'Fetternear', shows a church photographed from the side, with a path and trees in the foreground; [it appears to be the same church building as in PG/761; according to The Catholic Directory for Scotland for 2009, the current church at Fetternear is Our Lady of the Garioch and St John the Evangelist, built in 1859 but only open to the public from 1869; prior to 1859, according to page 110 of The Catholic Directory for 1859, the small body of Catholics used the Domestic Chapel of Fetternear House, the proprietor of which was Colonel Leslie of Balquhain, the proprietor; in The Catholic Directory for 1871, on page 113, there is reference under Fetternear to St Ninian's, or "the old Chapel" so it is possible that St Ninian's was the name given to the Domestic Chapel; it is not clear from the photograph which of the two churches this photograph represents.] |
