Description
The late canon's scrapbook contains a large collection of photographs, newspaper cuttings and personal postcards which document and illustrate various parish activities and news events which took place over the years. The newspaper cuttings include articles and accompanying images relating to television personality, Val Doonican, who opened the Christmas Sale at the church in 1965; proposed plans to widen Gravel Hill (1965); the opening of St. Theresa's Primary School, East End Road, by Cardinal Heenan and the opening of the new Parish Centre (1967); the Right Rev. Bishop Patrick J.Casey's parish visit (1967); Christmas day lunch and party held for the lonely and elderly members of the parish, organised by the Old People's Welfare Committee (1969); the consecration of the new church altar by Bishop Patrick Casey (1969); the confirmation of 44 adults and children at St Philip the Apostle by Cardinal John Heenan (1969); a performance of 'Murder in the Cathedral' by the St Philip the Apostle drama group, with actor T.P. McKenna, leading the performance (1976); celebrations to marke the 40th anniversary of Fr Louis Thomas's ordination into the Catholic priesthood (1983).
The photographs featured in the scrapbook include a collection of black and white images in relation to the Consecration of the Church of St Philip the Apostle; a colour photograph of parishioners posing in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, during a piligrimage to Lourdes (1981); a colour photograph of Fr Louis Thomas posing with priests and parishioners on the steps of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception during a pilgrimage to Lourdes (1975); a black and white image of the recently built archways of St Philip the Apostle Church; a black and white photograph of Fr Francis Hogan wearing a cope and biretta while digging up soil; black and white photographs of the interior of the first chapel in Derwent House which pre dated the Church of St Philip the Apostle (1920s); a small black and white photograph of a group of altar boys and a young girl standing on the grounds of the Convent of Marie Auxiliatrice during Corpus Christi.
The various postcards depict early 20th century images of East Finchley; Wood House Lane, North Finchley; Finchley Parish Church (1906); the Watercress Beds, Finchley; The Avenue, Finchley; Recreation Ground, Finchley (1909); Nether Street, Finchley; a man seated on a horse by Dollis Brook, Finchley.
