Description	A history of the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth from 1859-1992, written by the Hospital Archivist, Canon Louis Marteau. The hospital was founded in 1856 as the "Hospital of St. Elizabeth" by the Duke of Norfolk and was entrusted to the Sisters of Mercy. Originally located next to the Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London, by the end of the 19th century it had relocated to St. John's Wood and adopted its present name. The Hospital chapel was moved brick-by-brick from Great Ormond Street to its new site at the Hospital in St John's Wood. Although the Hospital closed temporarily in 1866 due to a lack of funds, it later reopened and is today one of the largest charitable organisations in the UK. The hospital devoted itself to the care of injured military personnel during World War I and World War II. In 1988 the Sisters of Mercy decided to withdraw from their role in managing and staffing the hospital and eventually the hospital came under lay management.
