Description
Black and white photograph entitled "Pilgrimage to Walsingham the English 'Lourdes" (August 19th 1934)' as per the title caption on the reverse side of the image. The caption also reads 'The first National Pilgrimage for four hundred years to Walsingham, Norfolk, to the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, took place this afternoon, Cardinal Bourne conducting the service. The picture shows the Blessed Sacrament leaving the Slipper Chapel.'
The pilgrimage procession can be seen leaving the Slipper Chapel to the left of the image while crowds of onlookers are visible either side of the procession. Men dressed in suits can be seen kneeling on a grass verge in front of a flint wall to the right of the image.
On 19th August 1934, Cardinal Bourne and Bishop Lawrence Youens led the Bishops of England and Wales, together with 10,000 pilgrims to the Slipper Chapel. During the pilgrimage the Chapel was declared to be the National Shrine of Our Lady for Roman Catholics in England (source https://www.walsingham.org.uk/history/).
