Description
A black and white image of Francis Bourne seated on the steps of St John's Seminary, Wonersh with a group of young priests all wearing cassocks, mozetta capes and birettas. Bourne can be seen seated in the middle of the front row wearing his pectoral cross. St John's Seminary was established in 1891 by Bishop John Baptist Butt as the diocesan seminary for the then Diocese of Southwark. Butt's aim was to break away from the more Jesuit inspired tradition of English seminaries and to found a college more in keeping with those on the continent. This image was taken one month after Bourne's appointment to the Archbishopric of Westminster. After his death in January 1935, Bourne's heart was deposited in the chapel of St John's Seminary. The reverse side of the image reads 'St John's Seminary Wonerish 21-10-1903 F.M.Case
